Academic Advising

At Madeira, each girl works closely with an academic dean to develop the course of study that not only fulfills requirements but also challenges and fascinates her.

The role of the grade-level advisor at Madeira is very clear. He or she serves as the primary contact with a student and her family and is always a liaison between the family and Madeira. The advisor helps each advisee build skills and use resources needed to manage school life in healthy ways. The advisor initiates a positive working relationship with each advisee and her parents. Girls meet in advisee groups each Friday, and the groups provide a time for camaraderie, discussion, relaxation, or reflection.

In alignment with the Madeira mission, advisors help each girl:

  • Possess a clear sense of self, of community, and of the world
  • Develop a strong commitment to life-long learning and service
  • Act with self-confidence and compassion
  • Assume responsibility for herself in the global community

Advising Time

The one-on-one relationships between students and teachers that are so vital to the Madeira education are often formed during advising time. Advising groups meet frequently in the middle of the day either as a group of one-on-one with their advisor.
