Breanna Atkinson '12 selected to US Womens Junior Training Team
Breanna Atkinson '12 was named to the 2012 US Womens Junior National training team (WJNTT). The top top 23 players in the USA were selected for this team and the 23 girls will be flown to Iowa in early July to train for ten days, then USA Volleyball will select 12 girls to travel to Managua, Nicuagura for the 2012 North America, Caribbean, Central America Volleyball Championships, August 17-27. GO USA!!!

Drop off of the text books does not happen until Monday, May 29 through Friday, June 1 at the School Store between 11:00 am – 4:00 pm.

Students place in National Language Contests
Students in the World Languages Department have been busy putting their talents to work. This spring, many students shined in their performance in national contests and others were awarded scholarships and acceptance into well-known programs. GATE Literary Magazine now available
GATE, Madeira's literary magazine also presented a selection of poetry at All School Meeting. Copies of GATE are now available in English classes, the faculty lounge, and is posted online. Students in Ms. Mattox's Advanced Studio Art class presented selections from their portfolio. Samples from thier portfolios and explanation of thier work is available as attachments to this article.

Korean Student Association present at ASM
Thursday, May 10, 2012 the Korean Student Association (KSA) presented at All School Meeting. The girls presented on the influence of Korea in popular culture including sports, television, and music. The girls also performed three dances to three different K-Pop songs. K-Pop is popular in Korea, China, and Japan and becoming more popular in other asian countries as well as the United States. Founder's Day
Today the community finally celebrated Founder's Day! After a winter with no snow days and a bit of cool and rainy weather in April Founder's Day was much anticipated. The sun came out and girls flocked to the Oval for music, food, dancing, hula hooping and much more! A few photos are online and more will be added tomorrow!

Gold Congressional Award bestowed on Madeira Junior
Lydia Parker '13 earned the Gold Congressional Award in April 2012. This award will be formally presented to Lydia by Congress at a national event this summer. The Congressional Award program is a goal oriented program that recognizes initiative, service and achievement in young people.

Su Ji Kim '14 wins at Landon Art Show
Su Ji Kim '14, a student in Mrs. Mattox's Studio III (Advanced) art class won third place in the drawing and pring-making category at the Landon Independent Schools Art Festival on Saturday. Su Ji was awarded a cash prize. Congratulations, Su Ji!

Athletics Department sponsors Move It in May Contest
The Athletics Department is sponsoring the "Move It in May" contest. Participants need to pair up and commit to working out for 30 minutes a day for five days each week. Participating in school sports does not count toward the goal. Track your exercise and submit the worksheet to Ms. Laschinger at the end of the month. Each eligible entry will be entered into a drawing. The winners of the contest will each receive a $50 gift certificate to the athletic store of their choice.
