The 2015-2016 winter athletics season came to a close at the athletics assembly on March 1. Director of Athletics Sue Cabot congratulated all the coaches and athletes on representing Madeira so well and thanked the parents and fans for bringing amazing spirit to our events. The winter season saw a variety of outstanding individual and team performances. Both the Madeira IEA and swimming and diving teams were undefeated in the regular season.
The 2016 swim and dive team is now the most successful and accomplished teams in Madeira history: undefeated in the regular season, ISL conference champions, a strong finish at the regional powerhouse meet, Metro Preps, and capturing third at the VISAA State Championship meet with five state records shattered and three individual All American qualification. The team graduates the most decorated and well-rounded swimmer in VISAA history in Kylie Jordan – recording eight state individual finals while breaking eight state records during her tenure.
The riders had an impressive season of their own, though they are not quite finished. The team brought home the IEA Regional Championship, allowing riders to advance to the Zone 3 Finals over spring break. The top three placing teams will move on the IEA Nationals in April. We wish them good luck!
Basketball, squash, and winter track all gained valuable experiences during the season. “This winter, we have All Americans, individual champions, relay champions, flats champions, jumps champions, record breaking times and scores, regional champions all amazing accomplishments and ones we all share great pride in,” said Ms. Cabot at the assembly. “Equally impressive but more subtle are the stories, the lessons, the shared experiences that the student athletes on all of our teams shared with their teammates and coaches each day since mid-November. It is not always easy, but you have all grown individually and collectively through adversity: for some, learning how to play; for others, improving your game. You have grown as teammates and made strides as individuals through this experience.”
Madeira now looks ahead to the spring season, and invites everyone to come cheer on the Snails at Spring Athletics Opening Day on Tuesday, April 5, 2016. There will be three home competitions: varsity lacrosse v. Holton Arms and varsity tennis v. Georgetown Visitation starting at 4:15 p.m., and junior varsity lacrosse v. Holton Arms at 5:30 p.m.Athletics
