On Friday, January, 4th the varsity girls basketball team traveled to Alexandria, Virginia to take on the Saints of St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes School. Trailing the vast majority of the game, the Snails scored 17 fourth quarter points to earn a 45-42 victory over the Saints.
Madeira scored the first bucket of the game, but did not lead again until under three minutes left in the fourth quarter, when point guard Amara E ‘20 found McKenzie F ‘20 open for a 3-pointer. McKenzie’s 3-pointer put the Snails up 40-38.
The Saints battled back to regain a 42-40 lead over the Snails with just under a minute to go. With 48.4 seconds on the clock, the Saints fouled Amara who drained two free throws to tie things up. The Saints were unable to convert down the stretch and the Snails capitalized on this opportunity. Annie N ’20 hit a key bucket to put the Snails up 44-42, and to stop the clock the Saints fouled Amara. Amara split the pair of free throws and the Snails took home the 45-42 win.
“The girls worked hard over the break and we had a great last practice,” said Coach LaRue. “We’re gaining confidence and leadership and slowly evolving into a team that knows what it needs to do to win. I’m excited to get a good win over a team we split with last year.”
Annie finished with a team-high 14 points, completing six of eight shots from the field. She was joined in double figures by Amara with 10 points and 5 assists and Cayla W ’21, finishing with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
