On October 30, Dr. Maureen Dowling, director for the Office of Non-public Education in the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Innovation and Improvement, spent a full morning visiting Madeira as part of a project to shadow principals from around the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia region.

Ms. Pilar Cabeza de Vaca and Dr. Dowling participated in a professional development session for student life curriculum teachers, taught by Lauren Roy and Stacy Tippens of Madeira’s Information and Innovation Department, and met with a ninth grade advisory group.

That same afternoon, Ms. Cabeza de Vaca joined Dr. Dowling to attend a briefing with U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan where school leaders from the region’s independent schools shared their experiences and ideas about the future of education.
