Madeira’s varsity track and field team competed in the Panther Meet at Holton-Arms on Tuesday, April 22. The team scored a season-high 52 points and earned third place. This showing was a complete team effort. In the sprints, Oyin Adenekan '16 won the 200M in a personal record (PR) of 27.6, followed closely by Niara Phoenix ’16 with a PR of her own of 28.4 (and fourth place). Sprinter Sequoia Ragland ’17 continued to grow in the 400M, running a PR of 1:11 and placing sixth.
In the throws, Madeira seniors Toulia Nwabunnia and Taylor Curry dominated. Toulia won the discus with a PR of 80’9, followed by Taylor in second with a hurl of 66’8. Taylor and Toulia reversed their order in the shot put, with Taylor winning the event with a put of 25’6 and Toulia placing second at 24’7.
Rounding out our success in the field events was Niara’s fourth-place effort in the long jump of 13’2. Sophomore Grace Huang tied for sixth with a PR of 12’11. First-time jumper Sahana Bhagat '17 even earned a PR of 4’ in the high jump.
Success in the distance events always bodes well, and our distance team’s performance was no exception. Junior Yasmeen McGettrick ran a PR of 5:59 in the 1600M, earning first place. Distance captain Gabrielle Dreux ’14 continued her command of the 800M, placing first with a season-best 2:28.
