The Madeira varsity swim and dive team captured the 2016 Independent School League Championships on Thursday, January 21, at the Hurd sports complex. Madeira finished the meet with 237.5 points, topping Flint Hill and Holton Arms.
Madeira claimed seven events and set four meet records. Individual event winners for Madeira were Kylie Jordan ’16 (200 IM and 100 Butterfly), Maddie Heilbrun ’18 (200 freestyle and 100 backstroke) and Izzy Gati ’18 (50 freestyle).
Jordan broke the meet record in the 200 IM (2:04.16) and Heilbrun took down the record in the 100 Backstroke (58.69).
Madeira won both freestyle relays in meet record time. The 200 freestyle relay (Gati, Giovi Moriarty ’18, Heilbrun, Jordan) in 1:38.44 and the 400 freestyle relay (Gati, Meaghan Doyle ’19, Heilbrun, Jordan) in 3:34.85.
“This was a great win for the Snails,” commented Madeira coach Rod Montrie. “When they read the score after the 500 freestyle, we were down by 35 points with four events to go. The girls regrouped, and those still racing knew what they had to do and never stopped believing in one another! It was a total team effort. Our top swimmers won the events we had to take, and our freshman and sophomores maintained their composure and battled for the extra points we needed for the win," Montrie said.
Other point scorers for Madeira were: Claire Simpson ’17 (12th Diving), Meaghan Doyle ‘19 (11th 200 FR, 3rd 100 backstroke), Giovi Moriarty ’16 (6th 200 IM, 6th 100 breaststroke), Romi Gould ’17 (10th 50 freestyle), Mary McCarthy ‘16 (9th 100 butterfly, 9th 500 freestyle), Lindsay Lukehart ’19 (10th 100 butterfly, 7th 100 backstroke), Jackie Tidd ’16 (11th 500 freestyle) and Sophia Bernstein ’19 (10th 100 breaststroke).
Jackie Tidd, Romi Gould and Morgan Rushforth ’19 achieved their state championship qualifying times bringing the number of Madeira qualifiers to twelve. Senior captain Mary McCarthy made her Metro cut in the 500 freestyle.Athletics
