The Madeira varsity swim and dive team opened their 2015-2016 season with a decisive victory over The Connolly School of the Holy Child 140-57, on December 3. The Snails qualified nine swimmers for the state championship meet in their first dual meet, and won both Freestyle relays; 200 Freestyle (Gati, Moriarty, Heilbrun, Jordan) and 400 Freestyle (Doyle, Morgan Rushforth ’19, Lindsey Lukehart ’19, Mary McCarthy ’16) and also won the 200 medley relay with an all-freshman line-up (Doyle, Sophia Bernstein ’19, Rushforth, Lukehart).
The team followed that performance up with a 121-65 win over ISL rivals Stone Ridge. Double winners for Madeira were Kylie Jordan ’16 (200 FR, 100 FL), Izzy Gati ’18 (50 FR, 100 FR) and Maddie Heilbrun ’18 (200 IM, 100BK). Other event winners were Giovi Moriarty ’18 (100 BR) and Mary McCarthy ’16 (500 FR).
Madeira broke their team record and set a pool record in the 200 Medley Relay (Heilbrun, Moriarty, Jordan, Gati) in a time of 1:51.84. Jordan, who signed to Duke in November, broke the 100 fly pool record.
Madeira also won the 200 Freestyle relay (Jordan, Meaghan Doyle ’19, Morgan Rushforth ’19, Moriarty) and the 400 Freestyle relay (Heilbrun, Doyle, McCarthy, Gati).
“Not only our top swimmers contributed to the win but our B and C lane swimmers were outstanding. We had big swims from seniors Jackie Tidd ’16, Elizabeth Leslie ’16 and Victoria Loshusan ’16. Freshmen swimmers Sophia Bernstein ’19 and Montie Saunders ’19 were also big contributors. Kaitlin McCarthy ’17, Grace Bilicki ’17 and Maddie Bennett ’18 had a great meet too.” said coach Montrie.
Madeira’s next meet will be on January 7th at home vs. Holton Arms.Athletics
