Snails attain numerous personal records at Potomac Track & Field Invitational

Madeira’s track and field team took part in its first full meet of the season Saturday, April 5, at the Potomac Invitational. With a mix of new talent and seasoned vets, Madeira placed seventh out of thirteen teams. Snail sprinters were led by Oyin Adenekan ’16, who placed fourth in the 200M and fifth in the 400M. Right behind Oyin in sixth place for the 400M was distance captain Gabrielle Dreux ’14, who also ran a gutsy 800M in a time of 2:43. In throwing, Toulia Nwabunnia ’14 won the discus event and placed fourth in the shot put. In the jumps, Niara Phoenix ’16 placed eleventh with a personal record (PR) of 13’. Yasmeen McGettrick ’15 earned a season-best for the distance team, running the 1600M in 6:32. Many other athletes achieved PRs as well, most notably senior thrower Taylor Curry’s discus attempt of 63’7”, earning her eighth place, and Grace Huang ’16, who competed in long jump for the first time and leapt to 12’4”.

The next meet will take place at St. Stephen’s – St. Agnes on Tuesday, April 15.
