UPDATE June, 6, 2014: The Madeira slam poetry team placed second at the final Washington D.C., Maryland, Virginia Louder Than A Bomb Teen Poetry Slam Competition held May 31. Congratulations girls!

On Sunday, May 18, 2014, Zharia O'Neal '15, Gaelyn Smith '16, Mona Hagmagid '16, and Sukrana Uddin '15 placed first at the semi-final Louder Than a Bomb DMV Teen Poetry Slam Competition, allowing them to move on to the finals. After qualifying with a second place finish at the LTAB Teen Poetry Festival the previous Sunday, the girls spent hours critiquing and practicing their performances with teammates Elfrieda Nwabunnia '17 and Kelleen Moriarty '15. Their hard work paid off against tough competitors from McKinley Technology High (DC), Bishop McNamara High (MD), T.C. Williams High (VA), and Cesar Chavez PCS Capitol Hill (DC).

"The team's informative, witty, and honest poems, along with flawless presentations gave them the edge over the competition," said team coach, Nina Candia. "It's really exciting to see the team move on to the finals."

The final competition will take place May 31, 2014 from 6:00-9:00 p.m. at George Washington University's Betts Theatre, 800 21st., NW, Washington DC. For more information visit www.ltabdmv.com.
