New Madeira Academic Schedule Announced

Sample Sophomore Schedule

On Wednesday, January 22, 2014, Head of School Pilar Cabeza de Vaca announced to faculty, staff, students, and current parents that Madeira will move to a modular schedule for the 2014-2015 academic year. The development of the new schedule is a direct outgrowth of the School’s recently launched Strategic Plan. The decision was based on extensive research and analysis by a committee of Madeira faculty appointed to the Curriculum Leadership Team, who also gathered input from students, parents, faculty, staff, and administrators.

The modular schedule allows Madeira the platform from which to continue to offer rigorous college preparatory academics and its hallmark Co-Curriculum program while allowing for increased student-centered and experiential learning. This innovative approach to scheduling allows for longer class periods, opportunities to study topics in depth, more interdisciplinary courses, and increased student-teacher interaction time.

The Co-Curriculum program will continue to be a cornerstone of the Madeira experience. Each student will continue to participate in the various internship programs offered at each grade level. Senior and junior internships are intensified; much like the college internship model, girls will now go to their internship daily for a full module. The new schedule will also offer sophomores and seniors the chance to work on more focused projects in their Co-Curriculum placements that can be linked purposefully to what they are learning in their classrooms. Freshman Co-Curriculum will continue to focus on building student identity.

“Changing Madeira’s class schedule constitutes a major step toward achieving one of our goals of being the leader in 21st-century girls’ education,” said Head of School Pilar Cabeza de Vaca in her announcement. “Our teachers have embraced a model that encourages active student engagement, collaboration, and problem solving. The new schedule will provide the structure to better support this model.” Read Ms. Cabeza de Vaca’s full announcement to parents here.
