This April, Junior Michaela Joyce represented Team USA at the fencing World Championships held in Cairo, Egypt.
Michaela earned her spot on the 17 and Under and the 20 and Under team in Fencing this spring. Epee fencing is an Olympic and NCAA combat sport where the athlete's actions are registered on an electronic scoring machine. Epee is a point weapon, where the goals is to hit first anywhere on the body. Michaela trains with Ilya Lobanenkov at Cardinal Fencing Academy in Sterling.
Michaela traveled with her family to Cairo in early April and placed ninth in the junior age group (18-21). Michaela’s accomplishment has made her the seventh ranked fencer in the world for that age group.
The FIE (International Fencing Federation) World Championships are held every year and the top four athletes from each country compete for the title of World Champion in individual and team relay events.
