The Madeira Varsity Swim and Dive Team concluded the 2016-2017 season with a third-place finish at the VISAA State Championships, which were held at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center on Saturday, February 18, 2017. The Snails finished with 253 points, behind Trinity Episcopal School (254) and St. Catherine’s School (285).
Madeira claimed one individual title: Izzy Gati ’18 (100 butterfly) and two relay titles: 200 Freestyle relay (Gati, Moriarty ’18, Davis ’20, Heilbrun ’18) and the 400 Freestyle relay (Gati, Doyle ’19, Davis, Heilbrun). The same freestyle lineup set a new team record with an All-American time of 3:30:58 in the 400 Freestyle Relay at the 2017 Washington Metropolitan Interscholastic Swimming and Diving Championships two weeks prior.
Other notable finalists for Madeira were Maddie Heilbrun (2nd 200 IM, 2nd 100 Freestyle), Izzy Gati (2nd 200 Freestyle) Sofie Davis (3rd 200 IM, 5th 100 Breaststroke), Giovi Moriarty (11th 50 freestyle), Molly Watts ‘20 (11th 200 IM, 14th 500 Freestyle) Niya Kelley ’20 (13th 500 Freestyle, 15th 100 Butterfly) Meaghan Doyle (10th 100 Freestyle), Lily Rathbun ’20 (7th 100 Breaststroke), Claire Simpson ’17 (16th diving). The 200 Medley relay (Doyle, Rathbun, Lukehart ’19, Moriarty) placed 7th in a new Madeira team record.
Gati, Heilbrun, Davis, Moriarty and Doyle were selected as members of the 2016-2017 All-State Swim Team.
“This was a great meet to cap off a great season,” said Madeira Coach Rod Montrie. “There was outstanding racing in all four sessions and superb teamwork and sportsmanship all around. I am especially proud of our relays for their wins and records.”
The 2016-2017 Madeira Swim and Dive Program finished their season with a perfect 9-0 dual meet record.
