Karate wraps up first module

Sixteen girls put on a demonstration for their parents and grandparents on Friday, October 10.  Students demonstrated empty hand sequences, bo staff forms (kata), stick fighting partner drills, judo-type throwing techniques, and board breaking. These techniques and others were practiced throughout Module 1 with an emphasis on self-defense applications. A few days prior to the demonstration, students received promotions to various ranks in USA Goju karate based on time in grade, proficiency of technique, and personal growth and development. The following honors and promotions were received:

  • San kyu (brown belt):  Yuanxin (Ashley) Ma ’15
  • San kyu ho (brown stripe on purple belt):  Julia Berley ’15
  • Yon kyu (purple belt):  Xiaowei (Janet) Wang ’15
  • Yon kyu ho (purple stripe on green belt):  Catarina Conran ’15
  • Go kyu (green belt):  Mandy Margarett Reilly ’16
  • Roku kyu (two-stripe white belt):  Michaela Laurencin ’15, Dong Hao (Helen) Yan ’15, and Ruyin (Lucy) Zhang ‘15
  • Shichi kyu (one-stripe white belt): Shiye (Sally) Cao ’18, Maddie Clemente ’17, Yunru (Isabella) Pan ’15, and Sibei (Sarah) Wang ‘15.

Additionally, Nana Acquah ’15, Ji Hee (Taylor) Chung ’16, and Mona Hagmagid ’16, all ranking green belt, provided outstanding leadership this term and received the coveted USA Goju patch. 

The karate activity will be offered again in Modules 3, 4, and 5 during D Block.
