Just What IS the Parents Council of Washington?

December 12, 2013

The Parents Council of Washington (PCW) is a consortium of more than 50 independent schools in the greater Washington, D.C. area.  Madeira is a member school.

What does PCW do?

The mission of the PCW is to bring the independent school community together to collaborate on timely issues affecting education, schools, students, and parents.

How does PCW benefit our school's parents?

The PCW offers free and valuable resources to the parents of its member schools, including:

  • Two lectures each year, free to member school parents, presented by prominent experts on education and parenting.
  • An annual “best practices” forum in which member schools collaborate on their approaches to a timely issue (recent topics have included Diversity, Students and Stress, and Encouraging Kindness in Schools). PCW publishes an online E-binder after the forum summarizing the “best practices” recommendations that emerged.
  • New in 2013, “Parent Speak,” a moderated forum in which member school parents are invited to share their perspectives in an open and frank exchange of ideas on parenting issues.
  • Extensive website resources at www.parentscouncil.org, such as articles by school headmasters, archived summaries of prior PCW programs, and lists of books and websites relating to a wide array of education and parenting topics.

Events are listed on the PCW website and in News Parent Can Use.
