Each year, Madeira hosts students from the the American Secondary Schools for International Students and Teachers (ASSIST) organization. ASSIST is an international student program which recruits student from all over the world to spend one year at an American independent school. This year’s impressive scholars are Astrid Olsson and Jette Sommer.

Astrid Olsson is a junior boarding student from Stockholm, Sweden. Back in Sweden she studied at the natural science program at Viktor Rydberg Gymnasium Djursholm. Rydberg’s program covers a wide spectrum of subjects, such as English, French, history, biology and math all of which Astrid is enjoying studying at Madeira. Astrid is a member of the Madeira varsity swim and dive team and enjoys playing the flute. She hopes to travel around the United States and Europe after graduating high school.

Our other ASSIST scholar is Jette Sommer. Jette is a junior from Braunschweig, Germany. Back in Germany she attends integrated/comprehensive school, which is a co-ed public school. After her year at Madeira she will earn her Abitur (diploma) after completing two more years of school. Jette is a member of the volleyball and track teams at Madeira.

On November 9, Astrid and Jette, accompanied by Madeira ASSIST representative Lynn Loving, participated in a trip to Mt. Vernon with the DC Chapter of ASSIST. After their visit to Mt. Vernon everyone gathered for refreshments and conversation, sharing experiences and stories about how their year is unfolding. “I am enjoying my year here and I'm really excited to be a part of the Madeira community,” said Jette after her first two Modules.
