Forensics with a pro

January 20, 2015

On Friday, January 9, 2015, Detective Derek Hardy of the Fairfax County Police Department visited the Forensic Science class at The Madeira School. He told the class about his career path from the police academy to the police force to becoming a forensic specialist and the different skills he developed along the way. Detective Hardy shared his expertise in handling crime scenes and quizzed the class on methods of collecting evidence and the relevance of certain types of evidence. The students were able to learn from several case studies, including cold cases that have recently been solved. He led the group through the details of blood spatter, fingerprints and morbidity, and asked the students to offer theories on cause of death or crimes committed. The names of the cases had been changed to protect the innocent.
