The final installation of Susan Lee's '12 independent art project was installed today. The sculpture called "The Fountain of Youth and Wild Reveler" is outside the art studio and the fourth part in the collection titled "Youth" Susan says "It is embodies the sense of lightness and carefree spirit that is so natural to young people, something I perceive as an integral part of being young."
This final piece of my Independent Study in Art is called “The Fountain of Youth and Wild Reveler.” It embodies the sense of lightness and carefree spirit that is so natural to young people, something I perceive as an integral part of being young. The colorfulness and the movement in the piece resemble this spirit, and the flowing quality of water shares it, too. I also tried to channel the same kind of youthfulness in the way I created the piece, using the unconventional medium of plastic ties in a spontaneous way. The “reveler” on top – a figure somewhat anonymous as it is only a contour – is completely engrossed in enjoying its present moment in the waves of youth.
As with everything, I have mixed feelings about my experience as an independent art student. A part of me is proud of having finished what I set out to do: envisioning, creating, and sharing art. I produced art that was visually pleasing (though never was I 100 percent satisfied…but is that even possible in life anyway?), and I presented it to a community of people I cared about. Another part of me is regretful of the lack of time and other resources that were available. I found my visions much too big for what I was capable of pulling off; If it were my fantasy, I would have completely covered several buildings with my color-block panels, printed a huge poster and hung it on the science building roof, built a high wall or maze of painted plastic panels, or actually built a fountain of youth!
All in all, it’s been a great learning journey and a very special experience. I am grateful for the opportunity to be so free in my art and for all the help and support Madeira has given me for this project. Thank you!Arts
