Fall Karate

During the fall trimester, 23 girls filled the ranks of the karate activity. Throughout the term, students learned strikes, kicks, sparring combinations, throws, stick fighting patterns, and empty hand and bo staff forms. The class took advantage of the beautiful fall weather to train outdoors on the science lawn whenever possible. Two highlights of the term were hosting visiting instructor Yvonne Thelwell from Aikido of Arlington and performing a demonstration for friends and family during Parents’ Weekend. The term culminated with belt testing and promotions according to technical proficiency and personal development. The following ranks in USA Goju Karate were awarded: 

  • Yon kyu (purple belt): Anna Bradley ’14 and Yuanxin (Ashley) Ma ’15 
  • Yon-kyu ho (purple stripe on green belt): Julia Berley ’15 – This is a preparatory rank for purple belt testing in a subsequent trimester.
  • Go kyu (green belt): Kyra Smith ’16 and Rachael Weininger ’16
  • Roku kyu (two-stripe white belt): Ji Hee (Taylor) Chung ’16, Lijing (Ella) Fang ‘14, Laney Flaesch ’16, Yifan (Gloria) Li ’14, and Hang (Jessica) Yin ‘14
  • Shichi kyu (one-stripe white belt):  Catarina Conran ’15, Jane Griffin ’16, Yoon Soo (Lily) Hyon ’16, Eunice Kim ’14, Michaela Laurencin ’15, Sang Hyun (Sidney) Lee ’15, Alexandra McMahel ’15, Yunru (Eudora) Peng ’15, Maura Perlow ’14, Sukrana Uddin ’15, Hanying (Benny) Xu ’15, Dong Hao (Helen) Yan ’15, Ruyin (Lucy) Zhang ‘15

The karate activity meets from 4:30-5:30 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday in the lower level of the health center and is taught by Dr. Stacey Boyette (Science Department) with over 30 years of experience in the martial arts.
