Fall athletic season comes to a close

November 7, 2014

From preseason to hosting the varsity and JV field hockey play days and hosting the Metro Volleyball Championships, Madeira Athletics Department had a busy fall season!

Madeira had a record 140 students participate in fall sports this season and a fantastic group of coaches, including nine faculty/staff members. Our athletes had success on and off the field with many students excited to return next season. Varsity tennis had a strong showing in their final tournament making it to the semi-finals before ending their season 5-3. Varsity field hockey had a great 6-0 victory in their last game at home against Middleburg Academy, but fell short of a win in the first round of their tournament. Cross country welcomed many new faces and saw tremendous improvement throughout the season, finishing 9th out of 16 at the ISL tournament. Varsity soccer persevered through many injuries to have a character-building season. Varsity volleyball finished the season with great wins over Middleburg Academy and Georgetown Visitation, the latter advanced them to the semifinals where they had a tough loss against the eventual tournament winner. The JV teams showed notable improvement from the start of the season, and coaches are looking forward to seeing them back next year for varsity try-outs.

Several students stood out this season, notably, junior goalie Kita Konerth. In varsity field hockey, Kita finished the season with 269 saves, which ranked her #2 in the Washington metro area for season saves as determined by the Washington Post. In addition, she was selected to train with the Futures Elite Academy in Colorado Springs in 2015. Kita was also recognized after competing with the AAU Junior Olympics and in the National Futures Tournament this past summer.

Senior Brie Perkins has committed to Coastal Carolina’s Division I lacrosse program and will be signing her National Letter of Intent next week. Perkins joins seven other Madeira girls who have gone on to play collegiate lacrosse since 2010.

Next year’s captains were announced at the fall athletic assembly on November 7.
