Senior Emily Barre has been selected as a winner of the National Merit Northrop Grumman Scholarship. Emily entered the competition of 1.6 million juniors who took the Preliminary SATs last year. Of them, 15,000 were named finalists.
Emily and her fellow National Merit Scholars are chosen from the finalist group based on abilities, skills, and accomplishments—without regard to gender, race, ethnic origin, or religious preference. A variety of information is available for NMSC selectors to evaluate: finalist's academic record, information about the school's curricula and grading system, two sets of test scores, the high school official's written recommendation, information about the student's activities and leadership, and the Finalist's own essay. National Merit Scholars receive scholarships from colleges, corporate sponsors or the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
Emily will attend Duke University in the fall, where she plans to study biomedical engineering and neuroscience.
