Closing Convocation 2019

The Madeira community joined together on Tuesday, June 4, 2019 to celebrate the successful completion of another school year. 

At Closing Convocation, community members celebrate achievements by faculty, staff, and students, and bid farewell to those leaving Madeira.

After remarks from Head of School Pilar Cabeza de Vaca, the student government leadership for 2019-2020 was installed.  

Madeira’s incoming student leaders are:
Class Co-Presidents: Grace Morgan ’20 & Annie Newton ‘20
Co-Heads of Community Service: Priya Batra ’20 & Grace Thomas ‘21
Head of Boarding: Lyric Thornton ’20
Head of Day: Gigi Jacobsen ‘20
Head of Judiciary: A’Nya Harrison ‘20
Co-Heads of Student Diversity Board: Tarina Ahuja ’20 & Salimah Hagmagid ‘21

Spanish teacher Rita Cooley was awarded The Melville Endowed Chair. The Melville Chair was established 1994 by Margaret “Peggy” Melville Blackwell ’37 and Ruth Melville Berlin ’38.

The Peddle Community Service Award, presented by Athletic Director Katie LaRue, was presented to Kelly Chandler, Assistant Director of Athletics.

Gay Byron Trophy – Maya Wyman-Pawar '22

Ann Swift Cronin Trophy – Maya Wyman-Pawar '22

This year’s yearbook dedication, chosen by the students, was to Ed Hamer, Director of Facilities.

Following Closing Convocation, students received their yearbooks and enjoyed the traditional strawberries and cream on the Oval.
