Author Julia Reed '78 to be 2019 commencement speaker

The Madeira School will welcome Julia Reed ’78 as the 2019 commencement speaker. 

Julia Reed is a contributing editor at Garden & Gun magazine, where she writes a regular column, “The High & Low.” Madeira's Co-Curriculum placement at Newsweek magazine’s Washington Bureau launched Julia's career, and she continued working at Newsweek throughout her college years at Georgetown University. 

For 20 years she was a writer at Vogue and she is the author of nine books, including: Julia Reed’s South: Spirited Entertaining and High Style Fun All Year LongSouth Toward Home, Adventures and Misadventures in My Native Land; But Mama Always Put Vodka in Her Sangria; and Queen of the Turtle Derby and Other Southern Phenomena. Her most recent book, Julia Reed’s New Orleans: Food, Fun, and Field Trips for Letting the Good Times Roll was published by Rizzoli in April 2019.

Julia serves on the National Advisory Board of the Eudora Welty Foundation as well as the board of the Link-Stryjewksi Foundation. She divides her time between New Orleans and Greenville, Mississippi. 

The commencement ceremony will be held June 7, 2019 on the campus of The Madeira School.
