Athletics Recap: 1/6 - 1/17/2020

Varsity Basketball:
1/13/2020 – Snails defeat Oakcrest
The Snails had a big win against a scrappy Oakcrest team!  Ruva K ‘21 led Madeira with 18 points, 16 rebounds, 5 assists and 6 steals.  She was followed by Amara E ‘20 with 16 points and 8 rebounds as well as Annie N ‘20 who contributed a double double with 12 rebounds and 5 assists.  Searra B ‘23 dominated the paint on defense with 13 rebounds and 4 blocks.  It was a great team win as all players contributed and had good minutes on the floor.

1/16/2020 – Snails fall to SSSAS, 45-49
This match up was truly a battle! Both teams played hard executing on the offensive and defensive ends. Madeira was led by Annie N ‘20 with 12 points and Ruva K ‘21 with 11 points, 4 assists, and 8 rebounds.  Also playing well were Peyton M ‘22 with 11 points and 7 rebounds and Amara E ‘20 with 10 points.

JV Basketball:
1/10/2020 – Snails fall to Holton Arms
Hollis M ’23 led the Snails with 8 points and a strong defensive presence holding the Panthers to two points in the third quarter.

1/13/2020 – Snails defeat Oakcrest
The Snails executed their offense flawlessly, resulting in their first of the season. Mary W ’23 led the Snails with 13 points.

1/16/2020 – Snails fall to SSSAS

Madeira struggled with the taller Saints lineup. Carys D ’23 stood out for the Snails with several defensive stops and key rebounds.

Varsity Swim and Dive:
1/09/2020 – Snails fall to Holton Arms, 72-108

1/17/2020 – Snails defeat SSSAS

Varsity Climbing:
1/14/2020 – Snails defeat EHS

The team's third meet, after a long winter break, was a mixed format meet against Episcopal, which the team won convincingly 122-106.  All the climbers were feeling the layoff from training over the winter break, but had lots of great climbing. This meet will serve as a spark for the rest of the season.  Grace Thomas and Grace F ‘20 were top scorers, each with two v4 boulders and a 5.10 toprope.  Mia S ‘21, Emily B ‘21, and Katherine M ‘21 followed closely behind.  Nandi M ‘21 was the team's JV Sender of the Week, who excels at bouldering, scoring a v3 and a v4.
