Sensei Yvonne Thelwell, far right.

On Thursday, October 10, the Madeira Karate Dojo was honored to host Sensei Yvonne Thelwell, fifth degree black belt and chief instructor at Aikido of Arlington. Sensei Yvonne has lived and trained in Japan and teaches aikido seminars throughout the United States. Aikido is a Japanese martial art that emphasizes harmonizing or blending with an attacker’s energy and causing harm only when necessary. Sensei Yvonne demonstrated many impressive techniques that the girls described as a flowing dance. With her direction and guidance, twenty-two girls paired off to practice evading and redirecting various attacks. At the end of the seminar, the class performed a short demonstration for Sensei Yvonne and presented her with a gift of appreciation.
