Each year, Madeira participates in the English-Speaking Union (ESU) National Shakespeare Competition. Students first compete at a school-level competition where they perform monologues and sonnets for a panel of judges. Winners then advance to a regional competition. This year the competition pivoted to an online platform, rather than in person.
The Madeira English Department organized the Shakespeare Competition and students created video recordings of their performances of a monologue and a sonnet, drawing in most cases on the work they had done for their English II: Shakespeare through Performance course. A panel of four Madeira English teachers scored the performances and awarded first place to Grace Hawkins '23, second place to Shania Sharma '23, and third place to Sarah King '23. Grace’s winning video performance will be entered into the next round of competition, the ESU Washington, D.C. Branch Shakespeare Competition.Academics
