Each year, Madeira participates in the English-Speaking Union (ESU) National Shakespeare Competition. Students first compete at a school-level competition where they perform monologues and sonnets for a panel of judges. Winners then advance to a regional competition.
This year, a panel of five Madeira English teachers scored the performances and awarded first place to Ella Tovares '22, second place to Amanda Xu '22, and third place to Elaine Lu '23.
Students perform a monologue and a sonnet, often drawn from the work that they have done in their English II: Shakespeare through Performance course.
These students' performance were particularly notable for their mastery of Shakespeare's language and their convincing character portrayals. Ella and Amanda will advance to the next round of competition. Students from nine area schools will meet to perform in the Branch Shakespeare Competition. This regional competition will be held at Madeira on March 2, 2020 at 1:30 p.m.
Congratulations to Elaine, Amanda, and Ella!Academics Arts
