My father sent me to Madeira partly because they offered riding. Mildred Gaines was the teacher at the time and brought her own horses to the stables (which were primitive compared to now...outhouse at the back). I LOVED Miss Gaines. I started out on the third team and ended up on the first. We did cavalry drills in the mud and snow of winter, but we learned! I got to join Fairfax Hunt in the second and third years and that's when I was bucked off and broke my ankle. Now I was no longer a neophyte and joined the ranks of the "experts." And I was not the first to be bucked off by that horse!
