World Languages
World Languages
The World Languages Department offers a variety of courses in each of four languages: Chinese, French, Latin, and Spanish. In teaching languages, the department aims to develop those qualities that lie at the heart of all good education: an inquiring mind; a broad-minded attitude toward other cultures; a sense of proportion; and an interest in the world. Studying two of the four languages offered is encouraged. To fulfill the language requirement at Madeira, a student must successfully complete a Madeira third-level language course in French, Latin, Spanish or Chinese. All students are encouraged to take a language for all four years or to consider taking a second world language. All incoming students take a Madeira language test as part of their placement process. Incoming student placements are made by the Chair of the Language Department and the Academic Dean.
Language Transfer Credits
All new students who have taken a language at another school must take a placement test to determine enrollment in a language course higher than Level I. Students who transfer to Madeira at the tenth or eleventh grade must take at least one year of language even if they place beyond Level III.
Summer Study
Summer study in language requires approval from the department head and an examination provided by the World Languages Department. See Summer Work Procedure Form.
