Junior Year
Junior year Co-Curriculum focuses on U.S. Government and politics. Girls intern in congressional offices on Capitol Hill, for lobbying organizations, or for governmental agencies dealing with policy issues. Tasks vary depending on the office or organization, but often include conducting research, giving tours, answering phones, responding to mail, running errands, giving tours, or conducting research. These tasks give students the opportunity to learn first-hand how the U.S. government works.
Preparing for Congressional Internships
To help prepare students to make the most of their internships, an extensive orientation on the branches of government is given prior to the start of their jobs. Co-Curriculum staff advise how to approach office responsibilities and best take advantage of the multitude of opportunities. In U.S. history classes, current events are discussed and professionals from media outlets, lobbying, and political consulting firms, and congressional offices are invited to speak.
Journals, Visits, and Evaluations
All students keep weekly journals detailing their experiences at their placements. A member of the faculty or staff is assigned to track each student's progress by reading the journal entries and offering advice on improving the experience. To foster support and understanding, junior advisors are encouraged to visit and observe their advisees on Wednesdays.
