Health Office
Six dedicated nurses staff the health center. Collectively, the nursing staff has many years of experience in all areas of pediatrics, including ambulatory care, hospital care of the pediatric inpatient, pediatric intensive care, and pediatric emergency triage. Other areas of experience include intensive care nursing, emergency room nursing and women’s reproductive health.
Hours of Operation
The health center is open from 7am–11pm. When the health center is closed, the student is able to access health care by contacting her house adult. A nurse is always on call and can be reached by the house adult whenever the health center is closed. Our school physician, Dr. Les Gavora, supervises the health center.
Counseling
The counseling program at Madeira is one of several resources that are available to help students adjust to the changes they go through during their time at Madeira. Any student is encouraged to seek out the counselor regarding any personal, social, or emotional concern. Often these concerns are normal adolescent and school adjustment issues and can be dealt with on campus between the counselor and the student. When the counselor believes more extensive professional help is needed, the student's parents are notified, and the student is referred to an outside resource with whom the school has established a working relationship. The counseling office, located in “The Den” under North Dorm, is open during the day and after school for students, parents, and Madeira adults who would like to meet with the counselor. Weekend and evening times are available by appointment or for emergencies. Ms. Denkinger, Madeira’s counselor, may be reached at 703.556.8298.
