Athletics

The goal of The Madeira School athletic department is to encourage, facilitate, and support the participation of our students in athletics.

As a member of the Independent School League, which consists of seventeen schools in the metropolitan D.C. area, Madeira has over 225 girls (75 percent of the student body) competing on twenty teams each year.

Madeira’s athletic program is based on the concept that athletics is an essential part of the school day and that all students should have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of sports. Student athletes demonstrate good sportsmanship, team spirit, discipline, cooperation, and an awareness of and appreciation for their teammates. Madeira’s athletic program strives to provide an atmosphere that encourages individual and team success, personal and group pride, and skill development for each player. The ultimate goal is for each athlete to achieve her personal best and gain self-confidence and overall wellness by developing her skills in the area of physical fitness.

Madeira emphasizes to its students, both as players and spectators, the importance of integrity and good sportsmanship. The Madeira community has been consistently selected as the recipient of the Independent School League Gary T. Blackman Sportsmanship Award.
