Washington D.C.
Academic Field Trips
Madeira is located on a safe, beautiful, wooded campus along the Potomac River. The physical
beauty of our campus, combined with our proximity to Washington, D.C., make for exciting
opportunities for our girls. We are fortunate to be surrounded by such natural beauty, yet still
be close to major cultural and social resources. During the summer, our girls take advantage of
myriad destinations in the area. We make Washington, D.C. and its depth of resources part of
the program.
Our students travel to Washington, D.C. for program-specific academic field trips that are educationally
relevant and culturally enriching. Instructors prepare course-related itineraries that
make use of Madeira’s relationships and illustrate real-world applications of students’ chosen
subjects. The Creative Writing Workshop students might visit the offices of Atlantic Monthly or
The Washington Post to see how a nationally distributed media publication works, while the
students attending So, You Want To Be President might visit a Congresswoman to talk about
the American political scene.
The Madeira School has a wealth of contacts throughout the area. Some of the destinations
girls may visit this summer include:
- The State Department
- Offices of members of the House and Senate
- Sackler/Freer Galleries
- The United States Secret Service
- Fairfax County Police
- The Washington Post
- USA Today
- The Design Centre
- Folger Theater
- The Kennedy Center
