Activities

At Girls First, we take full advantage of the long summer days and Madeira’s lovely, expansive campus in creating both organized and optional activities for the afternoons and evenings.
Staff members’ ideas, as well as student suggestions, contribute to forming a wide range of options, emphasizing social interaction, fun, and relaxation. Each day offers new adventures!

This summer, we draw upon our school-year theme – “Identity: Telling Your Story” – to offer a structured afternoon activity in which students explore their own cultural biographies through the art of storytelling and scrapbooking. After a day of coursework, students can relax with friends and spread out in the library to tell their own story.

Depending on the day, girls might also take advantage of the Olympic-sized indoor swimming pool, tennis courts, the playing fields, or a visit to the barn. Some students might simply take a walk along the Potomac or make use of the amphitheater for group games. Inside the dormitories, students use the computers, read, and play board games. Every evening, the entire program comes together to have fun, get to know each other and relax. The RA staff may offer anything from a zany talent show to crafts to outdoor games.

The Madeira School community and spirit weave their way through our Girls First summer.
Faculty members offer relevant and entertaining afternoon seminars; last year, students thoroughly
enjoyed the presentations on Public Speaking and Internet Safety. We also carry over some of our favorite school-year traditions into the summer – like strawberry sundaes and a Block Party at the Beeches – and our sessions would not be complete without Girls First Idol and a last night sleepover.
