Interior Design
Due to the popularity of our Fashion Design program last year, we are adding Interior Design to our course
options for this summer. Interior Design is great for new students as well as last year’s Fashion students
who would like to build on their experience. No special skills are required – just enthusiasm, imagination and
the willingness to practice, explore and learn.
Today, the broad scope of Interior Design offers so many opportunities for focus: office and residential
spaces, exhibition and gallery spaces, airports, schools, restaurants, stores and more. Through this course,
students are introduced to Interior Design as an integral element of the built environment as well as our
experience of and relationship to spaces both large and small.
Over the two-week session, students focus on a specific project through which to explore the areas critical
to the Interior Design Process. From designing to furnishing the space, students learn about light, color, form
and space as well as human factors such as scale, material and structure.
After learning about a brief history of interior design and looking at some key examples, students dive into
the task of designing. They assemble market, materials and inspiration boards. They practice communicating
through sketches and model making. They also learn how to present their work in a portfolio and discuss
the myriad career opportunities that exist in the field. The session ends with an exhibit of the students work!
