Forensic Science
Many of us have seen popular programs and movies showcasing forensic science – but how is crime scene
investigation really accomplished? We invite inquisitive minds to join our experienced instructors in our
Forensic Science class. No previous experience is needed. Our instructors start from scratch, teaching skills
that, by the end of the course, allow our students to examine a mock crime scene and solve a realistic case.
One of the reasons we teach forensics is that it applies a broad spectrum of sciences towards answering
fascinating questions about crime. By grappling with the intriguing mysteries of forensics, students acquire
skills that they can apply in many analytic endeavors. Students gain experience with a number of scientific
fields, like chemistry, biology, and physics – an experience that not only gives them a head start on their
school year, but may blossom into a lifelong interest. Students learn to process biological evidence, trace
evidence and impression evidence (such as fingerprints, shoe prints, and tire tracks), as well as to draw
upon ballistics information. Our creative instructors make sure that the material is never dry and always
connected to a compelling crime story.
Forensic science is inherently a field study, and the class frequently ventures outside for scientific investigation
around the Madeira campus. Field trips off-campus allow girls to see a real-life crime lab and talk to
forensic professionals. Getting an inside view of a growing, exciting field is an unforgettable experience;
our forensics students never look at a footprint or strand of hair the same way again.
