Academic Programs

At Girls First, our students benefit from the experience of instructors who are often pursuing advanced degrees, and who are innovative, engaging, and fun in class. Small class size and the individualized instruction ensure that every student’s experience is maximized. Collaborative group work, field trips and excursions, and inventive projects make every class day lively and varied. Students are consistently challenged to participate in discussions, work with others, and express themselves creatively.

We feel that an experiential academic environment in which each student selects one course
for the entire two weeks, allows a student to engage with her chosen subject deeply and
memorably. The advanced course work gives our girls a head start on their future pursuits. At the same time, we make sure that immersion is never a daunting experience, by shaping the courses to be informal and comfortable and by paying attention to each student’s unique learning style and personal goals. Each course features interaction with female mentors, leaders, and experts in that field.

Girls are expected to complete daily assignments, and present a larger project at the end of
the program. However, we find students are more open-minded and learn more when they
are not assigned homework or graded. Our instructors demand hard work and excellence, and provide individual feedback to help students achieve goals. Madeira’s educational philosophy encourages each girl to strive for her personal best.
