Global Travel & Exchange Programs

Madeira’s travel and exchange programs are designed with the intention of cultivating active and compassionate citizens of the world. Madeira students have many opportunities to experience the benefits of stepping outside their routine environments through cultural immersion.

More than tourist trips or vacations, Madeira’s global travel programs are immersive and experiential, led by faculty and staff who serve as organizers and cultural guides. Destinations change annually. Exchange programs with Chile, France, Spain and many others take Madeira students abroad for language immersion and bring foreign students to the Madeira campus for classes and home-stays with local Madeira families.

Although the language exchange programs are tailored for the Madeira language student, the spring break and summer trips are designed for any member of the Madeira community who is curious and wants to experience and learn about other countries and cultures. Family members and siblings, ages 10 and up, are welcome to join the group provided they can handle a large amount of walking and the hectic pace of the itinerary.

Read the Madeira in the World blog to share in our travelers' experiences.

Upcoming Language and Cultural Exchanges

Chilean Exchange

The Chilean exchange takes place in Santiago, Chile. For six weeks in January, three students from Villa Maria, an all-girls private school, come and stay with Madeira day-student families. For the duration of the module, they enroll in three courses and participate in the daily life of the school. The remaining week, they visit the surrounding areas and tourist sites. Three Madeira students then travel to Santiago for six weeks in the summer and follow a regular class schedule as auditing students. Days are spent at school and evenings and weekends with their host families.

Prerequisite:
To host:
Be willing to open your home and your heart to a visiting student and make her part of the family for the six weeks and in turn be able to travel to Chile for six weeks in the summer. Given that this exchange is open to only three students for a six-week period, there is an application process. Students are encouraged to apply after finishing their third year of Spanish. Note that students fly alone or with the other two Madeira students, but no chaperone travels with them for this exchange.

Chilean Students: January 2-February 6, 2017

Madeira Students: depart- June-July, 2017 (Girls have the flexibility to set their own dates)

Cost: Cost of airfare and personal expenses

French Exchange

The French exchange takes place in Rueil-Malmaison, 10 miles west of Paris. For ten days in April, twelve students from Centre Madeleine Danielou, an all-girls private school, come and stay with Madeira day-student families. They attend classes and visit sights during the day, and spend the evenings and weekends with their host families. In the summer, twelve Madeira students travel for ten days and follow a similar schedule, visiting Parisian sites during the day and staying with their host families in the evenings and on weekends. This year due to a conflict with their final exams, we will be staying in a hotel in Paris the last two days. Madeira students are able to participate in the exchange by hosting, traveling or doing both.

Prerequisite:
To host: Be a local family willing to open your home and heart to a visiting student and make her part of the family for the duration of her stay.

To travel: Preference is given to students who will have completed two years of French by the time of the trip. However, if there is room, students with less or no language experience may apply.
